You've probably heard people say before that you should dress in three layers. Why just three? And what exactly are the benefits of doing so? When your child is outside playing, it is important that they wear the right clothes to keep them warm, but not too warm. Therefore, today we will go through something called the 3-layer principle. We hope that after this article you feel a little more confident about how to dress your child for all weathers and temperatures.
Layer 1
Layer 1 is the layer closest to the body. Here, it is important to have clothes that are warm and comfortable. Depending on the season, these clothes need to be different temperatures. When it is still relatively warm outside, during spring and autumn, cotton and bamboo can be suitable. They warm nicely but not too much so that the child starts to sweat. When it gets a little colder outside, many choose to switch to wool. This is because wool is really warm and warms even if it happens to get wet or damp, something that can often happen when children are playing.
Layer 2
Layer 2 is often called the middle layer because it sits right between layers 1 and 3. Here it can be good to dress your child with a thinner jacket, for example a fleece jacket. It doesn't need to be windproof, it just needs to be really warm and comfortable. The advantage of such a jacket is that it can be used during spring and late summer when the evenings get cool. It's also really nice to snuggle up in front of a fire on a cold winter's evening.
Layer 3
When you have managed to find the right clothes to put on your child in both layers 1 and 2, it is time to tackle layer 3. This is where you put on the so-called shell garments. It is these garments that will protect you from the elements while the rest of the garments keep you warm. The big advantage is that you can wear a good shell garment all year round. If it's warmer outside, just skip layer 2.
The big advantage of dressing your child in three layers is also that you can easily take off clothes if it gets too hot. If the child complains, just take off the fleece jacket or shell garment to release some heat. If it gets cold later, just put it back on.
Boots
Boots are usually not counted as a layer, but if we were to count it, we would definitely say that it belongs to layer 3. The boot is an obvious part of how you dress your child and the part that we at Wobbi tend to focus on the most.
